From Oban we had a quick overnight stop back in Edinburgh, then took the train south to visit my gran in Doncaster. It was so good to see her and her husband Ken and they very kindly let us stay in their very deluxe motor home in their back garden. This motor home was better equipped than many houses I’ve lived in and was a really comfy place to stay!
We had several very competitive games of Rummikub, saw my aunt and uncle, ate lots of tasty food, and really enjoyed hanging out and chatting. We stayed for two nights, so we had bits of two days and one whole day there. Gran and Ken offered to take us to see one of their favorite castles in the area, so of course we couldn’t say no to that!
They took us to Castle Howard and it was spectacular! The grounds were beautiful and the house/castle is absolutely huge. This castle has been used twice for filming major productions of Brideshead Revisited and part of the upper level had an exhibition about how the filming was done.
We walked through the rose garden and the other beautifully landscaped gardens.
Was in New Jersey! Â I got a nasty tick bite. Â Those things are so gross. Â Justin had to dig it out with a needle and tweezers. Â And we thought we had escaped that kind of thing when we returned from South America unscathed!!!
Since I’m so incredibly behind on these blog posts this tour may not get quite as much attention as deserved. Â However, Justin has already put up our wildlife report and I’ll sketch out a few of the tour details.
Firstly, we went to the Manu National Park Cultural Zone with Amazon Trails Peru and would absolutely recommend this company. Â Since we only had a short time in Peru we did the shortest tour that got us close to the wildlife reserve. Â We had been a little concerned that if we didn’t make it all the way into the reserve we wouldn’t see very much. Â This turned out to not be a problem though and for the short amount of time we had we saw so, so much.
We also need to give a lot of credit to our guide, Carlos. Â He was excellent – knew all the birds, found us all kinds of things to look at that we would have missed, and could tell us all about the plants and how they are used by the people who live in the jungle. Â He also carried about 80 pounds of wildlife reference books (including one he had put together with his friends) and spent lots of time helping us record what we saw. Â Awesome!
The tour was 4 days and 3 nights. Â We started in Cusco and had a very long van ride out to the jungle. Â On the way we stopped at some pre-Incan burial ruins.
